Makers of Chandni Bar sequel deny Madhur's allegations of unauthorised title use
India, Oct. 9 -- Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, director of the National Award-winner Chandni Bar (2001), had filed a complaint over the unauthorised use of the film's title for an upcoming sequel. However, the sequel's makers has now refuted the claims, insisting they hold all necessary rights.
Producer Sandeep Singh's Legend Studios have now issued a statement denying Madhur's claims and affirming that they hold all necessary rights. According to the statement, the studio acquired the option rights from the original producers of Chandni Bar, represented by the late R Mohan's wife, Lata Mohan Iyer, who is the registered proprietor of the trademark, reports Bollywood Hungama.
Co-producer Vishal Gurnani also stated, "Sandeep Singh's Legend Studios has acquired the option rights of the said title from the original producers, who are also the owners of the registered trademark and IP owner of the original cult classic Chandni Bar (2001). We want to state that no other banner can legally make the said film. Our IP lawyers are replying to the concerned trade associations and are taking all necessary steps to validate and protect our legal rights."
In his complaint to the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), Madhur had alleged that Sandeep and director Ajay Bahl used the title Chandni Bar Returns without permission. Following this, IMPPA has directed them to immediately cease using the title.
