Gastroenterologist calls clove 'India's best solution' for bloating and acidity

rom turmeric to cumin, Indian kitchens are packed with spices known for their healing properties. Among them is clove, small in size but powerful in effect. Beyond adding aroma and flavour, this everyday spice offers significant digestive and anti-inflammatory benefits.
In a recent Instagram post, gastroenterologist and hepatologist Dr Shubham Vatsya outlined the health benefits of cloves and advised how much one should consume daily.
Several studies have highlighted the antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties of various spices. Clove, in particular, has drawn attention for its potent antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, making it stand out among other spice plants.
In the video, Dr Vatsya emphasised the medicinal benefits of cloves, especially for digestive health, calling them India's best solution for gas, bloating and acidity.
A key compound in cloves is eugenol, which he said works against H. pylori bacteria, known to damage the protective lining of the stomach and small intestine, potentially leading to ulcers.
"Cloves increase stomach mucus production, protecting the stomach lining," he explained.
Beyond gut health, he also credited cloves with helping regulate blood sugar levels and support liver function by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing gut inflammation and lowering oxidative stress.
He explained, "Cloves reduce gut inflammation and stimulate digestive enzymes. Regular use of cloves promotes good gut bacteria. They also support blood sugar and liver health by improving insulin sensitivity. Additionally, Cloves are very rich in antioxidants, which reduce overall body inflammation and oxidative stress."
According to the doctor, moderation is essential, as excessive intake may cause harm. He cautioned that while cloves are beneficial, an overdose of clove oil can damage multiple organs. To reap the benefits for gas, bloating, acidity and inflammation, he recommends consuming one to two cloves after meals....
