Two convicts in bilkis bano case move sc, notices to guj, maha
New Delhi, March 18 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought the response of the Gujarat and Maharashtra governments on appeals filed by two convicts in the Bilkis Bano gang rape case of 2002, challenging their conviction and sentence of life imprisonment by the Bombay high court in 2017.
A bench of justices Rajesh Bindal and Vijay Bishnoi issued notice on the appeals moved by Bipinchand Kanaiyalal Joshi and Pradip Ramanlal Modhiya and posted the matter for hearing on May 5.
The two convicts represented by senior advocates Sidharth Luthra and Sonia Mathur are the first to challenge their conviction in the case. Bano was gang raped in March 2002 amid communal riots in Gujarat when she was trying to escape along with her family. The riots broke...
