New Delhi, Sept. 12 -- A day after the resignations of actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar and former Maharashtra home minister Kripa Shankar Singh, acting Mumbai Congress president Eknath Gaikwad met the party's interim chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Gaikwad briefed Gandhi on the developments in the Mumbai Congress and also the party's preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra. The resignations of Matondkar and Singh, a former Mumbai Congress president, and desertions by other Maharashtra leaders also came up for discussions during the one-hour-long meeting.

A Congress functionary said Singh had resigned because he wanted his son to contest from the Kalina assembly constituency in Mumbai.
