EC plans 10% rise in polling stations for Assam, Bengal
New Delhi, Feb. 23 -- The Election Commission of India (ECI) plans to increase the number of polling stations by around 10% for the upcoming assembly polls in West Bengal and Assam, a move aimed at easing congestion and improving voter convenience, officials said on Sunday.
According to senior ECI officials, high concentration of voters at a single booth often results in long queues, overcrowding and delays, particularly during peak hours. "Reducing the voter load per booth helps ensure smoother movement and can positively impact turnout," one of the officials said on anonymity. "The proposal is based on population density and urban expansion trends."
