India, Jan. 1 -- Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels has long been a target for climate action. It was a goal agreed to a decade ago, in the 2015 Paris Agreement, with climate scientists arguing that breaching this threshold would lead to more severe climate disasters globally. Climate leaders, including at the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, now acknowledge that limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees could be virtually impossible, with average temperatures between January and November 2025 reaching 1.48 degrees over 1850s levels. 2026 will likely become the fourth consecutive year to cross 1.4 degrees of warming.
