Lucknow, Feb. 28 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday dealt a severe blow to the Samajwadi Party's poll plans in Uttar Pradesh by getting all its eight candidates elected, effective snatching one victory away from the SP, which had to be content with two seats instead of three in the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

Seven Samajwadi Party MLAs voted for the BJP's candidates while one SP MLA Maharaji Prajapati stayed away from voting. The Bahujan Samaj Party's only MLA Uma Shankar Singh also voted for the BJP candidates. Samajwadi Party MLA Shajil Islam's ballot paper was declared invalid.
