BJP snatches Mumbai civic body as old guard collapses
India, Jan. 17 -- It was the end of an era for the old guard in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections and the dawn of a new one for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which, along with its ally, the Shiv Sena, added a new layer of governance to its political dominance with its victory in India's financial capital on Friday. In the 227-member BMC, the BJP won 89 seats as compared to the 82 seats it won in 2017. Its ally the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena won 29 seats while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) got 65. In the 2017 election, the undivided Shiv Sena had won 84 seats.
