48-hour curfew in 37 Meghalaya villages amid council poll stir
Shillong, March 10 -- The Meghalaya government on Monday suspended mobile internet services for 48 hours in West Garo Hills district and imposed curfew in 37 villages after protests linked to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections escalated during the first day of nomination filing.
Protests erupted outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tura, where nomination filing for the April 10 GHADC polls began on Monday.
Demonstrators reportedly blocked and assaulted former MLA of Phulbari constituency Esmatur Mominin from filing his nomination.
The order, issued by Principal Secretary FR Kharkongor, said social media platforms could be used to spread misinformation and inflame tensions.
